New Zealand Tui on Flax Blossoms

This watercolor painting captures a tūī in a moment of delicate stillness as it perches among vibrant, flame-coloured blossoms. The bird’s iridescent plumage—deep blues, greens, and soft charcoal tones—is brought to life with fine detailing, while its signature white throat tuft stands out in striking contrast. The vivid flowers frame the scene with energetic bursts of orange and red, offering a lively counterpoint to the muted, textured background.

The composition celebrates the beauty of New Zealand’s native wildlife, pairing bold colour with gentle observation to create a piece that feels both intimate and full of life.
